Health Equity
Health equity is the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health. Achieving this requires ongoing societal efforts to:
- Address historical and contemporary injustices;
- Overcome economic, social, and other obstacles to health and health care; and
- Eliminate preventable health disparities
To achieve health equity, we must change the systems and policies that have resulted in the generational injustices that give rise to racial and ethnic health disparities.
Health disparities are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or in opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by populations that are disadvantaged by social or economic status, geographic location, or environment. Many groups face these disparities, including people from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds; people with disabilities; women; LGBTQIA+ individuals; people with limited English proficiency; and others.
Buckeye Health Plan supports systemic accountability for health equity, more rigorous data collection, and meaningful action on the social drivers of health. These commitments align with our efforts to reduce and ultimately eliminate healthcare disparities while improving health outcomes for all members, especially those in underserved populations.
